We Haven't Aged

Updated: Oct 21, 2021

"We are always the same age inside."

- Gertrude Stein.

We never really age do we? Songs instantly transport us 10, 30 years into the past so vivid, so memorable we can feel it like it was yesterday. The fun childhood trips, our first crushes, heartbreaks, sad experiences, whatever. As we drift into sleep, we sometimes stumble into an old, embarrassing incident that seems like it just happened and is still affecting us so strongly.

No matter how old, how influential or successful we are, we are always the same age inside. They say we grow up when our mothers pass away, but I don't think we ever. The reason for this phenomena is probably emotion. The emotions during our formative, insecure years were so strong, so fiery and they are etched deeply into our psyche. We are triggered every once in a while by songs, words, sights, no matter how many years pass us by. After all, we are all emotional beings aren't we?

I took this shot on a cloudy afternoon with my Sony A7II on the Samyang 85mm F1.4, setup at ISO 320 and speed 1/125s. The wide open aperture yields a nicely blurred background.

Enjoy reminiscing!
