Brutalist Architecture

"We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us."

- Winston Churchill.

I've always been intrigued by brutalist architecture, Gattaca or Clockwork Orange styled buildings and structures that inspire awe and impending doom at the same time. Walking in them fill me with dread and wonder, one of a few contradictions in life.

Singapore is the city with the highest density of greenery based on a list of 17 cities, higher than cities like Sydney and Vancouver according to a 2017 study that measured canopy coverage. Hence, it is appropriately called the Garden City. But it is still a concrete jungle due to the dense population and the need for high-rise buildings for housing.

This gives rise to buildings with Brutalist architecture, a style characterized by a massive, monolithic and 'blocky' appearance with rigid geometry. I like the look of Brutalist buildings and they make great photography subjects.

Hope this week will not be 'brutal' for you 😂.
